Appleby Castle was originally an earth ringwork and bailey fortress, founded by Ranulph le Meschin. In the 12th century, Hugh de Morville founded the stone keep and courtyard castle, by encasing the impressive Norman keep, with a sandstone rubble curtain wall. The eastern range, which contains the hall is flanked by a 13th century round tower and two 14th century square towers. To the north, the outer bailey, encloses a square 17th century stable block and to the south, other earthworks give defence. In the 17th century, Lady Anne Clifford restored the castle and made it her chief residence.
