Cardiff Castle is a Norman earthwork motte and bailey fortress, founded by Robert fitz Hamon. In the 12th century, Robert the Consul, earl of Gloucester, founded the stone castle, by adding a 12-sided shell keep to the large motte. Built in the western half of the Roman fort of Tamius, the castle lodgings have been given dramatic Victorian Gothic revival transformation, by the 19th century architect William Burge.
