Usk Castle is a Norman earthwork motte and bailey fortress, founded by William fitz Osborn. In the 12th century, Richard 'Strongbow' de Clare founded the stone castle, by adding a commanding three storey, square keep to the motte. A 13th century, inner bailey curtain wall, flanked by large round towers, encases the large flat top motte, with the keep protecting a simple, pointed arch gateway. After Civil War slighting, the 14th century gatehouse in the outer bailey was absorbed in the construction of Castle House.
